Let me preface this review with some boring information you care nothing about. The other day, I took a look at WebcomicZ's traffic stats and noticed that there has been a LARGE jump in visitors coming to WebcomicZ searching for "Adult Webcomics". Curious to see what we had to offer for these visitors, I perused the limited number of webcomics labeled with the 'adult' tag on my site. Having already reviewed one adult webcomic, giving it the site's lowest score, I was determined to find one that I could positively review. Luckily, the search was rather quick as my first visit found a very entertaining erotic webcomic.
'Chester 5000 XYV', by Jessica Fink, is set in what appears to be a Victorian era with light steampunk elements. It is a love story between a young woman, Pricilla, and a robot, Chester 5000 XYV. One of the most distinct elements to this comic is not the presence of sex and nudity, but the fact that an entertaining and fairly solid story is told without any dialogue. The occasional symbol is used in speech bubbles to express emotion, but other than that, no one speaks through out the webcomic.
Love, jealousy, anger, despair... all the elements of a dramatic love story are present in 'Chester 5000 XYV' without a single word being spoken. And the plot is very well developed despite this fact. Only recently has the story taken a turn I find somewhat unexpected. Don't get me wrong, as an erotic element, it spices things up. However, it took the story into a very Cinemax After Dark area where people just start messing around with each other all willy-nilly without any realistic plot behind it. It's a bit out of the blue from what I expected from the rest of the story. Still, despite that debatable flaw, one of the reasons I like this webcomic so much is the balance between eroticism and story that is maintained so well.
Needless to say, having a plot developed without dialogue places a great deal of responsibility on the artwork. Jessica obviously has a great deal of experience with illustrating as her talent shows through in this work. Simple but expressive line work is colored by what appears to be watercolor in grays, blacks and light pinks. It all gives the webcomic a very classical feel to it that fits the era in which it takes place very well. The sex scenes can get pretty explicit, which can be a positive or a negative depending on your tastes. Personally I found the erotic elements tasteful, erotic and entertaining; never too extreme.
And, like so many webcomics out there, the art does develop and improve as the comic goes along.
Site design: say it with me folk, "ComicPress". I know it's the easiest method of getting a webcomic on the internet, but someone needs to change that fact. Now, despite the ComicPress flaws in navigation, the site itself at least looks nice. Other than the webcomic itself, though, there's not much else to look at beside a small fan-art section and links to other of Jessica's sites (which contain more adult mini webcomics).
At the time of writing, 'Chester 5000 XYV' just hit 100 very entertaining pages. It is a pleasure to read an adult webcomic that is both well written and well drawn. If this type of material interests you, I recommend checking out and finding some way to support the creator's efforts.
