Google PageRank... finally!

Cool news. While I'm no longer on the first page for the term 'webcomic,' I have finally been assign a PageRank by Google. I now have a Google PageRank of 2! Not great, but its a start. Now its just a matter of getting more links pointing to me.

If you like the site, and want to support it, please link to me. Even a simple text link will help. Something like:
<a href="http://www.webcomicz.com"> WebcomicZ: Online Webcomic List </a>
with the term webcomic list in the link text would be great. If you do, let me know where and I'll see what I can do to thank you!

Until then, thanks everyone!

Webcomic Tagging - Beta

New Feature. The ability to tag webcomics with your own custom tags. This a webcomic is funny? Tag it with 'Funny.' Like a comic cause its had dogs in it? Tag it with 'dogs.' This a comic is stupid? mark it as 'stupid.' Its that simple

As a security feature, a tag will not become visible to the public until a certain number of visitors have put the same tag on a comic. So no one user has the power to label a comic with a paticular tag.

As an example, feel free to go and mark The Zombie Hunters with the tag 'zombies'. If enough people do it, The Zombie Hunters will be tagged as a comic with zombies in it.

Be sure to visit the public webcomic tag cloud.

You can also view your own from the account drop-down or in the control panel on your accounts page.

If you have any qeustions, please feel free to ask. An FAQ is in the works, as I now have a number of features that need some explaining.

Image Upload - Plus: Google Results!

Apparently, there was an issue with the image upload for avatars, icons and comic suggests that I was unaware of. When a jpeg was uploaded that was progressive, it caused an error. It shouldn't any more.

So, anyone who's had trouble uploading images recently, please feel free to try again and let me know. Thanks.

ALSO, exciting news for me: as of the time of this writing, a search for 'webcomic' will now show WebcomicZ on the first page of google. This apparently changes multiple times throughout the day, so you may not see it, but I have a feeling its close to getting a regular position on Googles first page for a number of terms. And that's all with a PageRank of 0 still. Can't wait till that improves.

Caption Contest and more...

So... sick.

Still, I'm here and working on some new features. Coming soon is an all out comic tagging system which will not only make finding new comics fun, but make it easier to organize.

Also, for those you who haven't noticed, there's a caption contest feature now running. Its pretty lonely right now, so people show it some love. And be sure to check out the Game O' Wonders on the forum too.

Plus, as mentioned on the forums. Hosting for Webcomics should be coming soon. I'm excited about this personally, cause i've never done anything like it before, and I think I can offer a lot.

More coming soon.

Small Change

Polls have now been added. More for my benefit than yours at this point.

Be sure to check back and voice your opinion on them when they update (which will be weekly now, but daily soon).

Also, two or three more big (and hopefully fun) additions should be in the pipeline for this week. Look out for them.

Webcomic Icon Upload - Live!

One of the most highly-requested features is now up and running. You can now suggest icons for your webcomics. If approved, they will become the default image for the webcomic. I'm trying to work on a way to allow multiple images, but honestly, I can't really see the point...

Either way, try it out.

Email down

My email is currently down due to the server switch. So anyone who wants to contact me, please use the message service on the site.

There's also a small issue there as well. With the way privacy settings are currently set up, you can't reply to a message sent to a person with privacy turned on. So I have to fix this tonight. Just letting you know.

Version 2 Migration

IF you are seeing this, then Version 2 is going live now.

Since the two versions will be running concurrently, if you also see the old version, ignore it as any changes made there will need to be duplicated to this site.

This is harder than I thought. I'll be busy. let me know if you run into any bugs

Version 2 Update

Things still moving along. I've added a few more ideas to the mix of Version 2. Right now I'm finishing up the profile section. Allowing blocked users, friends privileges and privacy setting.

I also completed the comic suggestion/update forms and functionality. I allow multiple genres, styles and formats as well as the ability to upload images when suggesting comics.

Things I have left to finish are:

  • Filtering - User set language filtering. (Easy)
  • Better Rank Calcuation - The current ranking system is kind of cheesy, I want to re-work it.(Easy)
  • Private Forums - Give some of those special members access to special forums. (may have to wait)
  • Avatar Upload - Ability to automatically upload avatars. They still need to be approved. (Easy).
  • Voting Categories - Allow voting on things like webcomic's art, story, humor, website, etc. (Easy)
  • Comic Tagging - Add keyterms to each comic for search purposes. (Easy)
  • Advanced Search - With so many options now for comics, members, avatars and others, I need a way to search them. (medium).
  • Super Secret Tools and Features - You'll see when they're done.

The hard is going to be bring the DB over to the new system. Everything's been changed so much that it will take some time to back up and migrate the data. The site will have to be down for a day or two while I do this so that no new data gets put into the old system. I'll warn you all before it happens.

And, on a "me-happy" note, I just got my first featured comic listing at the new increased pricing of $10. Yay capitalism!

Site Speed Issue Fixed... I think.

Well, I'm an idiot. Fixed the speed issues with the site, I believe.

Anyone who ever does Databasing... indexes... very important.

The site was taking like 7-10 seconds per page. Now it should be more like 1 to 2. And once the server switch is done, it'll be even faster.

More about that. I'm officially calling the server change my switch to Version 2.0 of the site. So, all my talk of "this weekend" was a load. Its taking long cause I want to do it right. And its coming along nicely.

So, with the load issues resolved, things can pick up a bit here and sustain itself a bit long while I keep going.
